main image Ruins of a peat-fired grain-drying kiln, Auchinlochy, Sutherland
Peat was the traditional fuel of much of the uplands of Scotland, and continues to be so for parts of the Highlands and Islands. In lowland Scotland grain-drying kilns, of similar form, were sited at grain mills.

The remains of kilns such as this can be found at the sites of abandoned settlements in the Scottish Uplands and the Islands. They can still be seen intact in the Northern Isles and Caithness.

The kiln would have had a platform, on which the grain was spread, and a fire, with a vent for incoming air. Peat is still widely used as a domestic fuel and in distilleries.
