Canal stables and workers' houses, Woodcockdale, West Lothian |
These stables and workers' houses are on the Union Canal, which ran from Edinburgh to the Forth and Clyde Canal at Falkirk, opened in 1822.
Before the advent of motorised barges, canals depended on horses to haul them. This accounts for the adjacent tow paths which run along the length of canals.
This building housed both canal horses and workers. Another, at Linlithgow, now houses a canal museum. |
