Water mill, Elcho, Perthshire |
This engraving shows two millwrights repairing the lade (water lead) on a water mill. The tall building beyond is Elcho Castle.
Water wheels were very widely used in Scotland to power machinery. The commonest type were for powering grain mills; during the 19th century many farms had water-powered threshing machines. The next largest group were textile mills. |
