Plan of early grass parks, Biel, East Lothian |
These parks were laid out in the early 18th century for John, Lord Belhaven, a pioneer Agricultural Improver and writer, under the pseudenom 'ABC'.
Enclosure allowed crops for livestock to be integrated into arable areas. Through rotating grazing and crops in any one field, the soil's fertility could be enhanced.
The orientation of field boundaries picks up on the grain of the topography. The fields are small by later standards. |
