main image Sheep and ring dyke, North Ronaldsay, Orkney
The ring dyke keeps the sheep off the island's arable and pasture lands and on the coastal rocks and beaches, where they graze on seaweed. It is almost 2m high and runs for about 20km around the edge of the island.

This dyke is similar to the old head dykes which separated arable lands from hill pastures. It is very unusual in still serving its original purpose.
