Rigs, near Coupar Angus, Perthshire |
By the mid 19th century, the old, high curving cultivation ridges had been replaced by lower, straighter ones confined within enclosed fields.
The man on the left is sowing seed by hand from a sheet tied around his body. The horses in the centre foreground are harrowing the ground so as to cover the seed.
The need to maintain ridges was about to end, with the widespread adoption of cheap subsoil tile drainage. |
