Urban countryside takes several forms. In this case, allotments and a public park in the former grounds of a country house.

Scottish towns and cities are built at higher densities than their English counterparts – characteristically housing was tenements. Allotments were intended to give tenement dwellers a chance to grow some of their own food.

The urban, recreational users for whom this park was intended can now move freely deep into the surrounding countryside with their own transport. They can also re-colonise the homes vacated by former estate employees and vanished farm workers.
