The deeply indented coastline of Scotland has provided good sites for naval bases: Port Edgar, Rosyth and Invergordon on the east coast and Scapa Flow in the Orkney Isles.

In the west, deep sea lochs were better still, with waters suitable for vessels of large draft and for submarines.

Faslane, established on the Gareloch during World War II, became the base for Britain's Polaris nuclear submarines and for its Trident successors. It became a focus for anti-nuclear protesters.
