The Firth of Forth became important to the Navy when the huge dockyard at Rosyth was developed, in the early 20th century.

During World War I, the Forth was important because it was out of range of German bombers, though Zepplins (airships) could reach it.

The destroyer base at Port Edgar was built on the opposite side of the Firth from Rosyth. The small, fast warships based there were intended to protect the larger ships when they went to sea. To support them extensive land facilities were needed including a hospital.
