main image Defensive houses, Dunderave, Argyll
In the 16th and 17th centuries, there were still large areas of Scotland where lairds felt they had to live in houses which could be defended from attack.

Dunderave was built in 1590 with thick walls and only small windows near the ground. Some of the windows have pistol loops below them.

At the same time, lairds were seeking more elegant ways of living. Dunderave has decorative stonework inside and the upper rooms have larger windows. The fact it was a house rather than a castle made it possible to rebuild it, in the early 20th century, into a comfortable dwelling.
