main image Cart bays, North Callange, Fife
One cart bay was thought to correspond to 70 acres of arable land. The eight bays here suggest a farm of some size. The space above the cart bays provided a secure, dry and well-ventillated space for storing grain.

This kind of 19th century housing became redundant with the development of larger, 20th century farm equipment. This site has since been converted for housing.
