During the 20th century, poultry farming has been transformed from a small-scale, domestic side-line to an intensive, large-scale business.

The built landscape of rural Scotland changed during the 20th century. Small, vernacular, stone-built farm buildings were replaced or supplemented with large, systems-built units more fitted to modern farming needs.

Towards the end of the 20th century, concern over welfare aspects of intensive livestock farming brought a partial return to less intensive methods and a premium on 'organic' and 'free-range' products.
