Casualties whose wounds permitted them to travel would often be moved back to Great Britain for treatment. Soldiers who recovered from their wounds would be sent to a Command Depot before being sent back to their units.
As the war progressed and the size of the army grew, medical support supplied by the RAMC developed to deal with the nature of the wounds received and the treatment of other ailments faced in the war. It became clear from an early stage that the faster a wounded man was treated the greater chances he had of survival.
