Unlike other polar expeditions of the period, the 1902-1904 Scottish National Antarctic Expedition (organised and led by Scottish scientist and explorer William S Bruce) had scientific research as its primary objective. Any attempt to reach as far south as possible, or to discover and explore new territory, was to be of secondary importance.
The most important factor in the selection of expedition personnel was therefore their range of scientific interests and abilities. Much scientific equipment was taken on the expedition, and the deckhouse of the Scotia was fitted out with two scientific laboratories: one for microscopic work, the other for zoological studies.
Judging by the penguin specimens laid out on the bench, it is the zoological laboratory that is illustrated here.
