main image Weaver's house and loomshop, Falkland, Fife
Weaving continued to be done by hand, well into the 19th century, long after spinning had been mechanised.

In the early 19th century, there were many thousands of hand-loom weavers – some 85,000 in the late 1830s – many of them working from home.

Their housing is quite distinctive – often single-storeyed, with an asymmetrical front having smaller windows on the longer side, each corresponding to a loom stance. These houses are most common in east and west-central Scotland, corresponding to linen and cotton weaving districts respectively.
