main image Souter Johnnie's House, Kirkoswald, Ayrshire
The trade of a souter (shoe-maker) was one which, like weaving, could be practiced from home.

This house has survived by an accident of history. Built in 1785, it was home to John Davidson, immortalised by Robert Burns as 'Souter Johnnie' in his poem 'Tam o' Shanter'.

In 1932, the cottage was one of the first acquisitions by the newly-established National Trust for Scotland.
