The first written references to curling date from the early 17th century, though its un-recorded history is thought to date back much further.

For many years natural bodies of frozen water or mill ponds were used, but the game's huge popularity in the 19th century led to the laying out of artificial ponds, the first in 1828. This photograph was taken in 1882.

The local clubs which administered curling originated in the 18th century, though most belonged to the 19th century. The club house was an essential adjunct, as store and shelter. Related social activities were held elsewhere, often in local hotels.
