Ruthven barracks, Inverness-shire |
After the unsuccessful Jacobite rebellion of 1715, the British Government took steps to bring the Highlands under military control. At Ruthven they removed an earlier castle and in 1715-21 built a barracks in which 120 men could be based.
In the following years, a network of military roads was constructed. This enabled troops to move more quickly and greatly eased the problems of supplying them with food and munitions. The barracks, along with the roads and bridges, were the visible indication in the Highlands that Scotland was no longer an independent country. |
