Parishes were the territories of churches (ecclesiastical parishes), from which they drew their income and their worshippers. Through the church they also became the basis for education and social services. Landowners, known as 'heritors', administered the parish.

In 1929, parish councils were abolished. Their welfare and education functions passed to county councils.

The dyke which curves across the picture follows the line of the parish boundary between the parishes of Glencairn and Kier, Dumfries-shire.
