Home farm steading, Rosebery, Midlothian |
Home farms were the farms run by landowners without a tenant.
This steading is built in a late-17th century style with a remarkably ornate front range. It has screen walls, pretending to be battlements, and a central clock tower which incorporates a doocot.
Landowners built home farm steadings like this to impress their friends and neighbours. Elaborate, formal examples such as this were not built with practical needs in mind. |
