Marriage of William Adam to Mary Robertson.

William Adam buys landed estate in Kinross-shire, later re-named Blair Adam.

Birth of James Adam.

Robert Adam enters Edinburgh University, having matriculated earlier that year.

Jacobite Uprising.  Robert Adam withdraws from Edinburgh University prematurely, after serious illness.

Robert Adam becomes assistant to his father.

Death of William Adam, senior.

October

Robert Adam departs Scotland to join Hon. Charles Hope, younger brother of Earl of Hopetoun, on Grand Tour.

Robert Adam arrives in Rome.

Expedition to Split (Croatia) to survey ruins of Palace of Diocletian.

17th January

Robert Adam arrives in London, on return from Italy, and sets up independent practice.

James Adam departs on Grand Tour. 

1761

November

Robert Adam appointed Architect of the King’s Works, jointly with William Chambers. 

1763

 

Design commissioned for Edinburgh Riding House.  Constructed 1763-4. 

1763

October

James Adam returns from Grand Tour and joins Robert in London.

Publication of Ruins of the Palace of the Emperor Diocletian, at Spalatro, in Dalmatia

Formation of William Adam & Co. 

1766

April-May

Competition for plan for Edinburgh New Town.  Won by James Craig. 

1767

July

Craig's plan for the New Town (probably altered from the competition-winning plan) is formally adopted by the City Council. 

1768

 

Robert Adam elected MP for Kinross-shire, and has to resign as Architect of King’s Works.  James Adam appointed to succeed him.

1771

 

Designs for Register House, Edinburgh.  The commission may have been awarded as early as 1769.  Construction begins 1773. 

1772

June

Robert and James Adam are nearly bankrupted by a banking crisis whilst building The Adelphi in London.  The Adams' reputation is badly tarnished and never recovers. 

1773

 

Publication of Part 1 of first volume of  The Works in Architecture of Robert and James Adam.  Four further parts appear before 1778.

Volume 1 of The Works in Architecture of Robert and James Adam published as complete volume.

Volume 2 of The Works in Architecture of Robert and James Adam published.  This has also previously appeared as five separate parts.

12th July

Terrace of shops and houses for Leith Street designed for Register House Trustees.

14th July

First scheme for South Bridge, Edinburgh, sent to South Bridge Trustees. 

1786

April

Second scheme for South Bridge, Edinburgh presented to South Bridge Trustees.

Designs prepared for Guardhouse and for a house for the Deputy Registrar, both for the Register House Trustees.

Designs prepared for University of Edinburgh

1790

October

Lord Provost Stirling asks Adam to provide a design for Charlotte Square (and, presumably, also the Church for Charlotte Square). 

1791

 

Competition for new Bridewell for Edinburgh.  Won by Adam.  Foundation stone laid on St Andrew's Day, 30th November 1791.

Death of Robert Adam, in London.   Buried on 10th March in Westminster Abbey.

First building plots on north side of Charlotte Square offered for sale.

Suspension of work on University of Edinburgh

Death of James Adam, London.

Bankruptcy of William Adam & Co. 

1811

 

Construction of St George's Church, Charlotte Square, to designs by Robert Reid, superseding Adam's design. 

1815

 

Competition to find architect to complete the rebuilding of University of Edinburgh, allowing "...the preservation of the architecture of Mr Adam as far as practicable."  Competition won by William Playfair.  William Adam, junior, also enters competition.

Sir John Soane buys collection of Adam drawings.
