Introduction
The Carmichael Family - those who stayed at home
Those who went to war 3
A Christmas letter, page 1
The grim realities of war were brought home to Henry as he spent his working days among these officers, tortured by the strain of warfare. His thoughts must have often been with the many members of his own family, including his sons still fighting at the front. It is clear from the many letters and cards which still survive that these boys were prolific letter writers and that even amidst the confusion of war the many branches of the Carmichael family managed to keep up with each other's movements. Letters to and from the front were an almost daily occurrence in the Carmichael family. In keeping with the majority of the population at this time letters were the main means of keeping in touch with each other.
