Deep sea deposits in the South Atlantic Ocean and the Weddell Sea

image from Springburn Virtual Museum

This map, entitled "Deep Sea Deposits of the South Atlantic Ocean and Weddell Sea" by J H Harvey Pirie, was printed at the Edinburgh Geographical Institute by J G Bartholomew. It was published in the Scottish Geographical Magazine of August 1905, illustrating an article of the same title by the same author under the heading "Some Results of the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition".

The samples of deep sea deposits were collected mainly by means of the sounding tube (see 031-054) invented by J Y Buchanan of the 1872-1876 Challenger Expedition.

The sounding tube was lowered over the side of the ship on a three-stranded wire under the control of the Lucas automatic sounding machine (see 031-053 and 037-017), driven by a 40 horse-power steam winch for fast rewinding.
