From the diary of David Crawford, the tenant of Figgitoch Farm, 21 July 1904: "A few minutes later a boat containing Commander Bruce and his staff glided towards the jetty in front of the Marine Station. Mr Bruce stepped out. His hand was warmly grasped by Sir John Murray KCB. The other members followed, meeting with the same cordial reception."
"What time the assembled multitudes gave their welcome in enthusiastic waving and cheering. The party then filed on to the grounds of the Biological Station where official recognition was in waiting."
"Sir John Murray, who presided, read the King's congratulations, and a similar message from the Secretary for Scotland, and thereafter presented Mr Bruce with the gold medal of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society, in appreciation of his excellent work."
