Antarctic camp

Here we see compelling evidence that the stereotypical image of the Antarctic - of it being totally covered in snow and ice - doesn't always apply in reality. It could be argued that the South Orkney Islands, lying entirely outwith the Antarctic Circle, do not strictly count as part of Antarctica, but the same applies to parts of the main Antarctic land mass such as the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula.

Judging by the extensive supplies and the ice axes seen here, the campers are prepared not only for the possibility of a long stay, but also for winter conditions.

This photograph is among those taken on the 1902-1904 Scottish National Antarctic Expedition, led by William S Bruce on the exploration ship SY Scotia.
