The Battle of Largs is not the victory you had hoped for. However, you retreat from the scene to regroup. Nothing has been resolved.

You travel back to Orkney and soon after fall ill.

Within your reign, you managed to secure land and homage within the Western Isles. However, alliances fluctuated constantly and you suffered for this. Everyone seems to have their own vision for the future of the west.

Your attempts at making peace with the King of Scots failed. However, take solace in the fact the Norwegian throne still has control over the Western Isles. You have accomplished what you set out to do.

Evidence of King Haakon IV's expedition to the west of Scotland. Kyleakin derives its name from Haakon IV's visit on his way to the Battle of Largs in 1263.

What happens next?
Haakon IV's death marks the 'last stand' of a Norwegian monarch to fight for control of the west. In 1266 his successor, Magnus the 'law mender' signs the 'Treaty of Perth'.
The Western Isles and Isle of Man are officially granted to Scotland and Norway maintains control of Orkney and Shetland (until the mid-15th century).
