In 1437, your father James I was assassinated by rebels. You were only six years old, but were crowned King at Holyrood Abbey. For a time the realm was governed by Archibald, 5th Earl of Douglas, who died after only a few months. A power struggle ensued and there was a great deal of bloodshed and double-crossing between the powerful Douglas, Crichton and Livingston families.
