Planned villages and towns
New settlement
main image Fishertoun, Auchmithie, Angus
This pre-Improvement fishing settlement dates back to medieval times. Most fishing villages date from later times – the 18th and 19th centuries – and were the planned creations of landowners.

The orientation of the houses, with the end of the row to the water, gave some protection from the worst of the weather.

Auchmithie features in Sir Walter Scott's novel The Antiquary, under the name of 'Musselcraig'.
