Punds Water

Punds Water image

On a small knoll on remote moorland lies this heel-shaped chambered cairn. It is made of quartzite boulders and measures 15m x 12m in diameter and about 1.4m in height.
The cairn's back is round while the façade ends in projecting horns. At the centre of the façade there is the entrance to the trefoil-shaped burial chamber.
Excavation in 1930 showed that the floor of the chamber was of red water-worn pebbles.
