Clach Mhic Leòid

Loupin' Stanes image

This impressive 3.2m tall monolith stands near the sea on South Harris (Ceann a Deas na Hearadh). It is supported by packing boulders. Other surrounding stones suggest that there may have been a cairn.
In prehistoric times it could have been a calendrical mark: at the equinoxes the sun sets over the island of St Kilda (Hiort), 60km away to the west and visible from Clach Mhic Leòid in clear weather.
A short distance to the south, now in a private garden, are the remains of Coire na Feinne chambered cairn (NG 047 966).
