HENGE, STONE CIRCLE
Broomend of Crichie image

Inside this Neolithic henge two of the original six stones of a circle survive. The third boulder (second from the right in the photo) is a 600 AD Pictish symbol stone moved here in the 19th century.
Under the two circle stones deposits of cremated bone were found. Fifty metres to the north of the henge there was once a stone circle of three concentric rings around a central cairn.
A long avenue of 72 stones ran south from this old stone circle to the henge and further on. Only three stones of the avenue survive (one is visible in the background of the photo, beyond the henge).
