HENGE
Balfarg image

This henge, now in the middle of a modern housing estate, comprises a broad ditch and an internal platform. There is no trace of the original bank round the ditch. There was a single entrance on the west.
A circle of 16 massive timbers (now marked by modern posts) was set up within the henge. Eventually the timber circle was replaced by a ring of standing stones (two surviving).
In the central area of the henge a young male person was buried in a pit. The two ton slab covering the grave is still in its original position.
The site, dating from 4000 to 1900 BC, was excavated in 1977-78.
