St Magnus Fair - SMC244

This is a picture of the St Magnus Fair. The fair is held annually in August on the Kirk Green outside St Magnus Cathedral. The St Magnus Fair is a modern invention but echoes the old tradition of a Lammas Fair.

The Lammas Fair, or Market, was held for three days from the first Tuesday in August on the Kirk Green. Hundreds of stalls were erected and they sold lots of different goods. The 1900 Lammas Fair was painted by Tom Scott.

The St Magnus Fair began in the latter part of the twentieth century as a method of raising funds to repair the Cathedral.
