On July 7th 1994 King Harald V and Queen Sonja of Norway made their first visit to Orkney. The visit began with a service in St Magnus Cathedral.

While in Orkney the King and Queen visited Stromness where they saw the Pier Arts Centre and the Stromness and Longhope Lifeboats. They also visited Stenness Community School where they were greeted by many guests. The visit ended with a service at St Olaf Cemetery where they laid wreaths on the 19 Norwegian war graves.

In 1981, King Olav V of Norway became the first reigning Norwegian monarch to visit Orkney in 700 years. He returned in 1987 for the 850th anniversary of the Cathedral.
