St
Magnus Plaque - SMC240
The
primary reason for the construction of St Magnus Cathedral,
according to the Orkneyinga Saga, was to provide a resting
place, and shrine, for the relics of St Magnus.
Apart from the magnificent building, almost nothing remains
of the shrine to St Magnus. What does survive are the relics
of St Magnus and the simple wooden box that held them in their
hiding place.
The relics were hidden during the Reformation and the shrine
dismantled or destroyed. A small plaque, and incised cross,
marks the final resting place of St Magnus in the south square
pier of the choir. It is immediately to the south of where
St Magnus's shrine would have been.
