Stone
mason cutting in a leaf formation - SMC238
This
is Colin Watson, the St Magnus Cathedral Stone Mason, starting
to carve the leaf formation on a finial. This was to replace
a finial that had been blown off the Cathedral during a gale.
He is cutting in the leaf formation on the finial with a mallet
and chisel. Colin also explains the problems and difficulties
when there are clay inclusions in the stone.
The new finial can be found mounted on the gable of the north
transept chapel.
