Stone mason setting out a stone - SMC237

This is Colin Watson, the St Magnus Cathedral Stone Mason, setting out a dressed block of sandstone. This was one of the first steps in replacing a finial that had fallen off the Cathedral.

Colin uses callipers to measure the width of one of the feafs of the finial. He then marks the correct location on the block of stone in pencil. This is done so that he can make an almost exact copy.

The finished finial can be seen on the gable of the north transept chapel.
