The 1661 Charter - SMC225
This is the charter of 1661 granted to the Royal Burgh of Kirkwall by King Charles II. The charter can be found in the Orkney Archives.
The charter of 1661 was a ratification of the charters of 1486 and 1536. It was necessary for the charter to be ratified because Scotland had spent a decade under the rule of Oliver Cromwell after Charles I was executed.
