The 1536 Charter - SMC224
This is the Royal Charter of 1536 granted by James V of Scotland to the Burgh of Kirkwall. The charter is in the Orkney Archives.
The charter contains the full text of the 1486 charter that gave Kirkwall the status of a Royal Burgh and gave St Magnus Cathedral into the ownership of the town. The 1536 charter was a ratification of the 1486 charter and did not convey any additional land or repeal terms.
The Orkney Archive contains a collection of charters and grants. Translations of them are available in John Mooney's book "Charters and Other Records of the City and Royal Burgh of Kirkwall".
