Ceiling boss - SMC207

This is the ceiling boss from the easternmost bay of the presbytery of the St Magnus Cathedral. It covers the intersecting points of the vault.

Bosses are an ornamental feature that serve to cover the intersecting points of vaulting. They are a raised knob, or projection, and often have foliage decorations.

The bosses of St Magnus Cathedral's presbytery vaulting are not characteristic of the economising that appears to have taken place during this period of construction. The spreading knots of foliage give emphasis to the vault intersections.
