This
is a ceiling boss in the first bay of the choir, from the
crossing, of St Magnus Cathedral. It was drawn by Sir Henry
Dryden between 1845 and 1855 when he spent summers sketching
aspects.
A boss is a knob or projection and is a purely ornamental
feature. Its purpose is to cover the intersecting points of
the ribs in a vault. Bosses, as can be seen in St Magnus Cathedral,
are often carved with foliage designs.
Bosses can be seen in the high vaulting of the choir and nave.
They can also be seen in the aisles but not all the vaults
have them.
