Photograph of Winding the Clock - SMC201
This is a photograph of the St Magnus Cathedral Clock being wound. The mechanism of the clock is in the tower in a place called "Cowper's Ha'".
It is the duty of the Cathedral Stone Mason to wind the clock every working day.
The clock can be up to ten seconds fast each day so it is sometimes necessary to correct the time. If the clock is fast this is a simple task but it becomes more technical if it is slow.
