Pendant Lights - SMC199

Electric lighting was installed in St Magnus Cathedral during the restoration of the early twentieth century. This pendant lamp can be found in the St Rognvald Chapel, or presbytery, and is one of six hanging in the arcade.

Light fittings from this period can also be found mounted on the walls on the transepts. Pendants, such as those in the presbytery, were also hung in the arcades of the choir and nave but have since been replaced with modern spotlights.

Before the Cathedral was refurbished it was lit by large pendant gas lamps. The holes for the pipes can still be seen in the choir vault.
