This is a poem by Robert Rendall. It is about the coming of the Vikings and their conquests. The Martyrdom of St Magnus and the building of St Magnus Cathedral are mentioned.

Robert Rendall, 1898-1967, was an Orcadian poet, essayist, historian, and conchologist (shell expert) amongst many other things. He attended Kirkwall Grammar School until he was 13 and after that he was self-educated.

The poem can be found in "Orkney Variants and Other Poems". Rendall also wrote poems in Orkney dialect.
