the Kirk Laft" by Robert Rendall - SMC188
This
poem is written in Orkney dialect. It is about the hangman's
ladder and the pulpit stored in the south triforium, "the
sooth laft", of St Magnus Cathedral. The poet is Robert
Rendall.
Robert Rendall was , amongst many other things, a poet, historian,
and conchologist (an expert on shells). He was born in Glasgow
in 1898 but moved to Westray, his family home, in 1905. Rendall
was largely self educated.
The poem was published in "Orkney Variants and Other
Poems" by Robert Rendall.
