Marble steps - SMC181


These are the steps to the south transept chapel of St Magnus Cathedral. Both transept chapels have green marble steps which were installed during the early twentieth century restoration. The marble for the steps came from Iona.

Other marble in the Cathedral includes floor settings for the tiles in the choir and presbytery; the columns on the 850th anniversary font; the inscription honouring King Hakon Hakonson; and various memorials throughout the Cathedral,

During the Dark Ages, Iona was the heart of Christian Scotland. It was the place where St Columba built his monastery,
