Thomson's graveyard research - SMC174
Amongst
the various items in the Albert Thomson collection in the
Orkney Archive are a collection of jotters, plans, and an
index that all relate to the graveyard of St Magnus Cathedral.
There is an alphabetical index of all names recorded on the
gravestones. The plans of the graveyard divide it into twelve
sections and make it easy to locate individual graves. The
eight jotters provide handwritten details of the inscriptions
on all the stones.
According to Albert Thomson's calculations, the graveyard
of St Magnus Cathedral contains at least 5,888 people.
