St Magnus Cathedral - SMC170
According to the Orkneyinga saga, St Magnus Cathedral was built to be the most magnificent church in Orkney. It was intended from the outset that it would be the episcopal seat and the resting place of St Magnus's relics.
With this in mind it is clear that the Cathedral was built as an impressive mausoleum church. St Magnus's reliquary would have been on view in the shrine at the east end of the Cathedral.
Text 3 Mason's who were involved in the construction of St Magnus Cathedral may have been involved in the construction of Durham Cathedral. Durham Cathedral was built to house the relics of St Cuthbert and is also a mausoleum church.
