Albert Thomson - SMC167

This is Albert Thomson ringing the curfew bell. Mr Thomson was the Custodian of St Magnus Cathedral from 1946-1978.

During his time as Custodian he was responsible for the maintenance of the Cathedral, the ringing of the curfew bell, and the guiding of tourists round the building. Following a dispute between Mr Thomson and his employers, in 1961, access to the tower by the general public was restricted.

Albert Thomson was awarded the British Empire Medal in January 1973. This was an
acknowledgement of his services as Cathedral Custodian.
