The Bishop's Palace - SMC163

This is the Bishop's Palace in Kirkwall, Orkney. It is likely that there has been an episcopal residence on this site since the mid-twelfth century when construction of St Magnus Cathedral

Most of the standing remains of the building date from the mid-sixteenth century. Bishop Reid rebuilt the palace along the basic lines of the original building but added a great round tower.

Robert Reid was Bishop of Orkney from 1541 to 1558. He was a counsellor of King James V and a very successful statesman.
